You should certainly shop for the best price, but always keep in mind that quality counts. If you buy the least expensive window chances are it will cost you in the long run. You do not need to spend your hard earned money on the most expensive choice, the middle of the road models are typically the smartest way to go.

window installation

Many homeowners hire professional contractors to install windows, however this is a project that most people can do themselves by following these three (3) simple steps.

Step 1: Measure twice and install once.

It is extremely important that you accurately measure the size for each window that you plan to install. Performing this simple task will save you a lot of time and aggravation. Your window(s) will go in much easier, and fit far better.

Please note: Take all of your measurements from the inside of your home instead of the exterior. Not only is the measurement more accurate that way, you can avoid climbing extension ladders.

Calculate the window height by measuring down from the top of the sill to the bottom of the head jamb. Take two measurements in order to insure accuracy.

Calculate the window width by measuring from the inside of the left jamb to the inside of the right jamb. Once again, measure twice in order to insure accuracy.

Step 2: Remove Your Old Window(s)

New windows are manufactured to fit into your existing window frames, so technically you will only need to remove the old window sashes, along with the parting bead, and inside window stop.

Please note: Similar to measuring from inside of your home instead of the exterior, it is easier and safer to install the new window(s) from inside of your home.

The first thing to do is remove the inside stop pieces. Do this very carefully because you will be using them again when you install the new window(s). Then take off the inside sash, and slide the outside sash to the bottom of the window frame.

Remove and dispose of the parting beads. Next, eliminate the outside sash in the same manner as the inside sash. You need to leave the exterior stop in place, as it will secure the new windows.

Step 3: Install your brand new window(s)

Now comes the fun part. You get to install your shiny new windows!

The first thing you need to do is lay down a bead of caulk along the outside stop of the window jambs, then caulk and install the sill angle.

Center both the top and bottom sashes in the window frame. Slide the bumper stops toward the center of the window frame. There are a total of four mounting holes located on the side window jambs. Make sure they are visible before proceeding. Caulk the top of the header after positioning it on top of the window.

Place the window in the frame, and use a level to ensure that it is sitting square. Shim as needed in order to properly square if needed. Install the four mounting screws into the side jambs.

If there is a small space between the top of the new window and the old frame, than seal it. Test out the top and bottom sashes, by raising and lowering them, in order to ensure that they are working properly. If they do not move smoothly, use the built in adjustment screws to tweak the window frame. Last but not least, caulk the inside of the new window, and reinstall the window stops.

Enjoy your new window(s).
